EDUC 6990: Week 2: Local and State Organizations

  • At least three local or state organizations or communities of practice that appealed to you, any job opportunities, skills and experience for said jobs, and explain why you chose them.
The three organizations I chose were:

1.  CSUF: My alma mater: http://hr.fullerton.edu/Jobs/

The reason why I chose my alma mater was because i always told myself that I would go back and teach there someday. My time spent there during undergrad was memorable and meaningful. I would love to give back and work as a faculty in the Child Development department. For example, I would need a Master's Degree and experience teaching adults to qualify for an adjunct instructor in the CDE program.
2.  Pacific Oaks College: http://www.pacificoaks.edu/Home
I chose Pacific Oaks because I remember touring the college and child development center years ago when I was getting my AA degree  I always thought having a job there would be out of my reach but now I see it as something very attainable--within my grasp. The most recent job openings they show are for Master Teachers and Faculty. Currently, I do not qualify to be a professor as they need a PhD. I do qualify to be a Master Teacher in the preschool classroom.

3.  OCDE—Orange County Department of Education: http://www.ocde.us/Pages/default.aspx
I chose OCDE because they were the organization that helped me afford child care for my son when I was working and going to school. They provided scholarships for me and they are responsible for all of the Orange County schools. They have several departments in which I could work and affect change. The qualifications for the openings they have are what I have now. For example, the position of Project Liason for ECE department only requires a Master's or equivalent and experience teaching adults.

  2. Kim,
That is amazing that the organization helped with child care and to pay for your school! We need people like you in the education field and thanks to this organization that you were able to be successful! We need more organizations like that to offer programs like the one you used.

  3. Hi Kim, I like how you are personally connected to each of these organizations and therefore each would be more meaningful to you. Karen is absolutely correct when she says "we need more people like you in the education field!" I did not know there were organizations that would support one like this. What an incredible opportunity for you and your family! It made me immediately think, here is an organization that understands, and embraces the African proverb, "It takes a village..."
I like the layout and organization of the Orange County Department of Education website. The fact that they cater to the needs of families says a lot about their philosophy. I will definitely be revisiting their site for more ideas. Thank you for sharing.

  4. Kim,
Enjoyed reading your blog and seeing how you connected to each one of the organizations you listed. You seem to be familiar with each one. I think it was great that you had the organization to help you with childcare while attending school. I like to read about organizations that are there to help families who are working toward achieving their goals. Thanks for sharing and I want to wish you the best of luck.

  5. Going back home, where the roots were developed always has a special place in our hearts. I know it does in mine I wouldn't be here without those experiences or systems of development. You're close to having that Master's degree...have you reached out and asked questions? Good luck and great resources. Talk with you next week

  6. Kim,
I think that returning to institutions or organization that supported your professional growth demonstrates the impact of teaching adults and providing services for families with young children can be. It is reward for those organizations to see how you have taken their effort and been successful. Thanks for helping me recognize the cycle of professional development. It adds an additional dimension to the intentional nature of my work.

  7. Kim,

Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts. I think it is wonderful that you want to go back and teach where you once learned. I never gave much thought to this before, but after reading your post, it makes sense; it would be a nice way to pay it forward. Have you had any experience in teaching young adults? Something that you might want to look into, if you decide to take on one of these roles, is the Adult Learning Theory. This is something that has helped me within my professional and academic development. Thanks again!

  8. Hi Kim,

I have enjoyed reading your blog. Your connection with each is on a personal note. With all that you partake in during your undergrad years, I can see the importance of wanting to give back. I too had the opportunity to give back to my alma mater, I was able to work as the lead toddler teacher in the Child Development Center there on campus. Having the opportunity to receive a scholarship to assist with child care is a wonderful advantage that a lot of people do not get to experience. I enjoy reading about organizations striving to work with families to help them work towards achievement.
